Ron is a Quantity Surveyor by training and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, with over 50 years of experience in the industry. He has throughout his career had the benefit and experience of working on a wide variety of projects within the various sectors, including Food Production, Education, Leisure, Retail, Commercial and Heritage, in all aspects of both new build construction, restoration and refurbishment and alterations of existing buildings. Many of these projects were delivered on a “fast track” basis particularly in the Retail and Leisure sectors as well as the Property Led Development projects.
He led the Management Buy Out of Simpson in 1994, and along with his wife Beryl Gatenby they are the main Shareholders of the business. Ron has successfully grown the business initially as Managing Director and more latterly as Chairman & Chief Executive, to be a strong debt free and profitable business.
Ron has instilled an ethos in the business of “here to help”, keeping our clients at the centre of our delivery. This mantra supported by our high-quality project delivery, a non-contractual approach and friendly approachable delivery teams has resulted in a very high percentage of repeat workload from our clients and consultants.
Beryl is active in the role of Non-Executive Director, attending monthly Board meetings that are focused on the leadership, strategy and management of company business and policies, taking into consideration adaptability to changing markets and trading conditions, and the further development of other members of the Board.
Prior to becoming a Non-Executive Director in 2010, Beryl was an active member of the business and Board of Directors, supporting Ron and her Co-Directors with Business strategy, development, management and marketing, presentation of information and documentation, ensuring they were cascaded effectively throughout the business. Beryl was the leading Director behind Simpson obtaining our Investors in People Accreditation, and has continued to support the team in its reaccreditation over the years.
Andy joined the business in June 1998 as an Assistant Contracts Manager, progressing to his current position as Managing Director.
Andy is an experienced member of our team having worked on projects on a wide variety of sectors, including Education, Heritage, Food Manufacturing, delivering “fast track” retail, leisure and commercial projects throughout the UK.
As a key member of the Strategic Board of Directors and a senior member of our leadership team, Andy supports and delivers the strategic growth of the business, with a current focus on Business Development and growing our on-site Development opportunities.
To relax outside of work, Andy is a keen cyclist and enjoys walking his dog with his family.
Russ joined the company in 1994 as a Quantity Surveyor becoming Commercial Director in 2000. In January 2022 Russ became Contracts Director with the responsibility for our fit out, production and delivery on site. Russ is a member of the Strategic Board of Directors.
Since joining at the time of the senior management buy-out, Russ has headed up and more recently supported our Quantity Surveying department.
Previously, Russ took a leading role in many of our key client accounts, developing and maintaining successful working relationships, with the responsibility for many of our most technically complex projects, on both a design and build and traditional basis.
Russ is now part of the Pre-Construction department where his knowledge of both fit-out and construction projects supports the development of thorough, compliant tender submissions and providing cost information and contract advice to help mitigate potential risks to the project programme.
Mark has been with SIMPSON for nearly 30 years and is an integral member of the team and Consolidated Board.
He is a highly experienced Construction Director with practical experience at all levels of the construction industry having started his career as a joiner. Mark quickly progressed his career via commercial, design and project management delivery roles in various sectors. His role includes leading our construction teams and developing excellent client relationship skills and commercial awareness which are used to bring multi-disciplined teams together to achieve high quality results, on time, within budget in a safe working environment.
Mark’s passion lies in undertaking heritage projects, which include Durham Cathedral, Clifford’s Tower, Ledston Hall and Salford Cathedral. He is known within the industry for his knowledge and drive for maintaining and improving heritage buildings for future use, with a clear understanding of the unique nature of these types of projects, their requirements in terms of procurement and the impact works the works can have on local communities.
Mark understands the vital importance of clear communication in establishing what is happening on-site from all perspectives, and he has the people skills to communicate and work effectively across a diverse project network.
Prior to joining Simpson in 2011 Phil helped facilitate Business Improvement in a number of Blue-Chip Construction companies.
Phil was appointed Best Practice Director in 2014 and has overall Business responsibility for Health and Safety, HR and Training, Quality, our Management System registrations, performance measurement and the delivery of our Sustainability strategy.

Jason has over 30 years’ experience in the construction and fit-out industry.
Jason leads a team of 7 within the Estimating department overseeing projects ranging from £30k to £21million, maintaining technical standards and procedures.
As the first point of contact for clients and suppliers, Jason has excellent communication and organisational skills creating new client relationships and developing into repeat client workload.
Jason is known for his forward planning and ability to make judgements and assessments on budget costs, working closely with the Contracts Managers, Pre-Construction Managers, Planners and Client Teams.
Jason’s knowledge has gained over the years, experience on complex projects , which enables him to work with the Pre-Construction Team, in helping clients with Value Engineering opportunities, and work to prepare tender documentation, working closely throughout all stages of the project to ensure that the costs are kept in line with forecasts.
With over 15 years in the industry Steve is an experienced Commercial Director with a demonstrated history of working in the construction, fit-out and development industries.
Steve has exceptional skills in negotiation, value engineering, cost management, contracts, dispute resolution and Sub-contract management and has a pragmatic approach to forming long-lasting relationships with Clients, the Design Team and Supply Chain. Steve has formed and developed the commercial systems within Simpson that are crucial to the success of the company.
Steve has overall responsibility for the successful operation of our financial, surveying and commercial project activity, including all aspects of procurement, purchasing, performance measurement and strategic post contract management activity of the business.
Steve maintains control of formulating procedures and processes to achieve all financial targets determined by the Shareholders and Strategic Board members, ensuring all sections of the business achieve financial success to support the Company Business Plan.
